Mandate of the UK Tropical Forest Forum

The following mandate was agreed at the Forum's inaugural meeting in February 1991.

What is the UK Tropical Forest Forum?

The UK Tropical Forest Forum is an independent association created in 1990 in response to the growing concern within Britain for the future of the tropical forests. The Forum is open to all British-based governmental, non-governmental, public and private organisations, companies and individuals, with an interest in the sustainable utilisation and conservation of tropical forests. These include development agencies, conservation organisations, charities bringing relief and aid to tropical forest countries, human rights organisations, academic departments and training centres, commercial, industrial and trade organisations, amongst others.

What is the objective of the Forum?

To strengthen the coherence and effectiveness of British-based actions in support of the sustainable use and conservation of forests and forest lands in tropical countries, for the benefit of their peoples, and for the forest's global environmental values. The Forum seeks to assist the exchange of information, to improve understanding, to build consensus through dialogue and debate and to disseminate the results as appropriate among its members and more widely through links to other organisations both within the UK and abroad.

How does the Forum operate?

The Forum meets regularly to discuss tropical forest issues. Information is also distributed by newsletter and other correspondence. To the extent that specific studies, research or other actions may be needed to further Forum objectives, its role will be to define the action needed, to identify possible agencies to carry out the work, and to assist in seeking the necessary funding from the public or private sector.

How is the Forum financed?

The Forum has an annual membership subscription and seeks sponsorship for specific Forum activities such as Working Groups and workshops

Who runs the Forum?

The Forum has a Chairman, a Secretariat and an advisory panel. The Chairman of the Forum is Professor Julian Evans, the Director of the Forum is Ms Jane Thornback.
